On Wednesday August 28, 2019, a ground breaking ceremony occurred in Peguis First Nation in the frontage area of the Peguis Mall for 2 new developments of a new 25,000 square foot 20 Unit Motel to include a restaurant dining facility, 20 VLT non-smoking area, meeting room and a 30 person indoor swimming pool.
The second development is a new 6,000 square foot facility gas station with restaurants to house a Robin’s Donuts and Robin’s Drive-Thru and Pizza Hotline franchise.
The timeline for construction to start is September 4, 2019 and ending construction by July 2020.
The ceremony commenced with Elder Floyd Sutherland with the opening prayers followed by singers of Peguis FN.
On behalf of Peguis Council, Chief Hudson addressed the crowd with words of encouragement, the visionary path of years ago leading to today’s accomplishments and the future of Peguis and it’s economic prosperity. The different approaches of business models of today have been realized with efforts and support of the community and the Elder’s group.
“The days of government handouts are now secondary, the independence of realizing opportunities is coming to fruition, the entry into new industries will create specialized capacity building within our Nation and continuously provide innovative revenue streams” says Chief Glenn Hudson.
This is a historic day for the community and one to be proud of, many individuals directly and indirectly contributed to the developments of these projects says Randy Councillor-CEO of Peguis Development Corporation.
The physical landscape around the Peguis Mall will considerably change over the coming months by way of providing a business park to house retail stores, restaurants, gas bars, car wash, laundromat, maintenance buildings, community Splash Pad, RV park, new Pow Wow arbour.
The development falls in line with the Community Comprehensive Plan for economic development. The document is seen as a driving force to produce Revenue, Sustainable Employment, Capacity Building, Wealth Creation and providing an economic foundation for the Youth.
Peguis has a plan to be major economic player and be recognized as a key business model for other communities nationally and internationally.
