Re-Opening Child Care Services Plan 2020-2021


The Peguis Free Spirits Child Care Centre Committee has explored a variety of routes for re-opening childcare services under the safest conditions during our new norm of living with Covid-19. With our leadership ensuring education and practices in safety and health guidelines are set forth by the community, the centre will be providing childcare services in the safest manner.

The centre has re-opened child care services as of July 20, 2020. Child care spaces are dependent on the occupation of parents and prioritized according to Canadian Government’s ‘Essential Workers’ list. Refer to Upon review and extensive discussion by the above team, the following 2020-2021 program is in progress:

  • Centre open to staff and families with restrictions of all guests being appointment based
  • Regular operating hours of 8am to 5:30pm
  • Child care services open to children 10 months to 4 years old
  • Before & After school program suspended 
  • Reduced child numbers in classroom  
  • Risk assessment screening taking place upon entry: sanitize hands, masks to be worn during high traffic times (drop off and pick up), health and safety questions answered with all sick or symptomatic persons required to stay home
  • Removal of the hot lunch program; parents bring child’s lunch
  • Centre providing AM & PM snack; individual snacks served by one staff to limit contact
  • Eating areas will be spaced out to ensure social distancing 
  • Parents that require child care services can contact the centre to be placed on the waiting list
  • Updated Parent Handbook 2020-2021 Covid-19 edition: if one case is determined within the community or neighboring communities, there will be full closure of the centre with information to follow


Risk assessment screening:

  • Daily temperature checks for all adults and children upon entry; temperature checks for children and staff in the afternoon
  • Daily health questionnaire for all households will be conducted upon entry
  • Face masks are mandatory to be worn by adults during high traffic times: between 8am to 10am and 3pm to 5:30pm
  • Enhanced cleaning and sanitizing is conducted to all highly touched surfaces throughout the day and as needed

Social distancing practices:

  • Limited gathering space within centre 
  • Daily program education & Signage posted
  • Classroom environment set up and marked for physical distancing. Ex. individual activities/experiences per child
  • One family to enter centre at a time

Hand washing practices:

  • Regular routine of handwashing upon arrival, before and after eating/bathroom/diaper change, after outdoor play and as needed throughout the day
  • Daily program education & Signage posted

Cough etiquette practices:

  • Role modeling from staff to children
  • Daily program education & Signage posted
