Peguis First Nation just might have representation in the Olympics for the first time. Two band members have the 2014 Youth Olympics in sight.

Savannah Catherin Chapman has been invited to the try out for the wrestling team for Canada at the Youth Olympics, and Deon Cameron can qualify for the Youth Olympics at the Summer Games in August.

How did your childhood experiences motivate you to excel in athletics, specifically wrestling?
I’m self-motivated, and want to succeed in something in life.

What is your motivation in your current training sessions?
Wanting to do something my family can be proud of.

What is your current workout regimen?
Push-ups, sit-ups, core strengthening, and jogging.

What next events are you preparing for?
I am attending the 2013 Canada Cup is this weekend in Guelph, Ontario. After that, the Legion Athletic Camp will be held at the International Peace Gardens from July 14th to 20th, it’s training for the Canada Summer Games. The 2013 Canada Summer Games are in Sherbrooke, Quebec from August 2, 2013 to August 17, 2013.

For those that don’t know, you need to fundraise for your wrestling. Can you explain a bit about what the fundraising is for and how much you need to raise.
For the 2013 Canada Cup I received funding from the Peguis School Board covering the flights, registration and accommodations, so a big thank you to the Peguis School Board for the support.

I am fundraising now for the 2013 Canada Summer Games and need to raise money for uniforms and expenses. I am also fundraising now for the Legion Athletic Camp. I have been selected to try out for the wrestling team for Canada in the 2014 Youth Olympics in China. Our fundraising goal is to reach $15,000 to cover expenses.

What advice would you have for the Aboriginal youth from your experiences?
Set a goal, believe in yourself, and push.

You have been invited to the 2014 Youth Olympics. How do you feel about this opportunity?
Overwhelmed but Very excited and nervous. I feel very honored to be representing my people at the 2014 Youth Olympics.

How did your childhood experiences motivate you to excel in athletics, specifically wrestling?
My father pushed me to be a better athlete and influenced me to get into sports. He helped me a lot, especially with wrestling.

What is your motivation in your current training sessions?
My teammates are my motivation, they’re the ones that get me back up and push me to keep going.

What is your current workout regimen?
One day jogging, the other day is a mix of Crossbow, push-ups, and sit-ups for about an hour and a half.

What next events are your preparing for?
In Quebec, August 1 -10, 2013, the 2013 Canada Summer Games. The Legion Athletic Camp will be held at the International Peace Gardens from July 14th to 20th. If I place good at Quebec, I will earn a seat at the 2014 Youth Olympics. If not, I can still try out for the team.

For those that don’t know, you need to fundraise for your wrestling, can you explain a bit about what the funds are for and how much you need to raise?
$2,500.00 to go Quebec for travel expense, and also need to fundraise for accommodations. If I qualify for Olympics, we’ll need to fundraise for travel to China.

What advice would you have for the Aboriginal youth from your experiences?
Keep working on your dreams, keep your goals high and do your best in everything.

The Olympics. How do you feel about this opportunity?
Awesome experience, I’ve never been to the Olympics, I’m excited and looking forward to it.
